Playable Interactive Experience
Axolotl Defender
Guardian of Xochimilco
A conservation-themed browser experience: swim the twilight canals of Xochimilco, restore water, and protect the axolotl refuge.
Challenge
Conservation stories often live in pamphlets and films. The studio needed a playable experience that teaches concealment, habitat restoration, and sanctuary — without turning wildlife into a shooter. Axolotl Defender is a Majestad Digital Works original interactive experience, not a client commission.
Creative Direction
The world is twilight Xochimilco: canals, roots, lily cover, and a chinampa refuge. The wild brown axolotl is the canonical form; other skins are cosmetic. Character and invasive-fish sprites are derived from licensed Robert Brooks artwork — Majestad Digital Works does not claim copyright over that source art. Environment, systems, narrative, and interface are studio-directed.
Wild Defense Gameplay
Survival is concealment, stamina, and restoration — never hunting. Stay still in roots, plants, or hollows to vanish; open water cannot hide you. Boost to escape. Dive near the surface to avoid herons. Invasive fish patrol the canal. The HUD reports Exposed, Concealed, or Hidden. Carry egg clusters to the refuge and restore biofilters to clean the water.
Environmental Storytelling
Canal vegetation, lily pads, and root tangles are not decoration — they are how the axolotl survives. Cover, water quality, and the path to Chinampa Refuge tell the conservation story through play rather than a brochure.
Sanctuary and Population Recovery
Chinampa Refuge is the destination. Eggs hatch when the water is clean. Each run tracks sanctuary protection and juveniles hatched. The briefing includes a conservation fact: wild axolotls once thrived in Xochimilco’s canals; clean water and chinampa habitats remain essential to their survival.
EN / ES / JA Localization
Menus, briefing, HUD, and system messages are localized in English, Spanish, and Japanese. Launching from the site passes the current language so the experience opens in the same locale.
Desktop and Mobile Controls
On desktop: WASD to swim, Shift to boost, Ctrl to dive, Space to hide, E for Gill Sense, Q for Sediment Veil, and Escape to pause. On mobile: a joystick plus Boost, Dive, Hide, Sense, and Veil. Landscape is recommended on small screens.
Accessibility and Reduced Motion
Menus are keyboard-reachable, the canvas is labeled, and sound can be muted. The game respects prefers-reduced-motion. The site launch overlay traps focus, restores the Launch button when closed, and keeps a still poster for visitors who prefer reduced motion.
Technology and Performance
The game is a canvas web experience. Marketing pages load only an optimized 16:9 poster. The game iframe, scripts, audio, and atlases are created after Launch and removed when the overlay closes so playback and network use stop. Case-study stills below the first viewport lazy-load inside reserved 16:9 frames.
Launch Experience
Play in a full-viewport overlay from this page or the homepage Interactive Studio. Close is always visible in the parent interface. If loading fails, Retry or Open Directly. Closing unloads the game so audio and assets stop.
Player and invasive-fish sprites are derived from purchased Robert Brooks packages. Majestad Digital Works does not claim ownership or copyright over that source artwork. This page does not invent a client, audience size, conversion result, revenue, award, or other metric.
